The cute Oreo reindeer are individually wrapped, which makes them great for gifting and keeps them fresh. Perfect for a military care package!

On cookie trays or in a gift box, Rudolph cookies boost smile-filled holiday spirit.

    Ingredients

Ingredients: brown pipe cleaners, Oreos, red hots, melting chocolate, candy eyes, 3" x 5" plastic bags.
    • I prefer to use Newmans Own sandwich cookies. Their cookies are made with slave free, ethically sourced cocoa. Oreos are not.
    • Use either dark chocolate or milk chocolate melts.
    • Pipe cleaners are available at craft stores and online.
    • Find candy eyes with the decorating sugar in supermarkets and Target, as well as online.
    • Purchase 3" x 5" plastic bags at cake and candy decorating stores or online.

    Instructions

This is an overview of the instructions. The full instructions are in the recipe card below.

Instructions: dip cookie in chocolate, add eyes and nose, put cookie in bag, cut pipe cleaners.
Instructions: twist pairs of pipe cleaners together, twist around neck of plastic bags.
    1. Dip a cookie in melted chocolate. Place the cookie onto a baking sheet lined with wax paper or parchment paper.
    2. Immediately add the candy eyes and red hot nose to the top of the cookie.
    3. When the chocolate has firmed, place the cookies in plastic bags.
    4. Cut the pipe cleaners in half. Turn under the tips of the pipe cleaner wires to eliminate sharp edges.
    5. Twist two pipe cleaner halves together, until the untwisted ends are about ½” long. Fold the twisted pipe cleaner in half to mark the middle point.
    6. Twist the pipe cleaner around the neck of the bag.

    Storage

    Tips

    • For a smooth, firm chocolate coating, use tempered chocolate, candy melts, or confectionary coating chocolate. For best results, don't use melted chocolate chips.
    • Use a glass bowl to melt coating for dipping. The chocolate will melt more smoothly and evenly.
    • If your coating is too thick, stir in a table spoon of paramount crystals or 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil or vegetable shortening.
    • Rudolph's red nose can be made with your choice of small red candy such as a red hot, a mini red m&m, or Sixlets.

    Frequently asked questions

Can you use regular chocolate chips for dipping?

There are two reasons not to use chocolate chips for dipping. First, the melted chocolate will be too thick and will need to be thinned with vegetable shortening, coconut oil, or paramount crystals.
Second, the coating will never become totally firm nor shiny, and will probably bloom with a whitish appearance (from the cocoa fat separating from the chocolate) within 24 hours.

What is the best way to melt chocolate for dipping?

The best way to melt chocolate is gently, either in a double boiler or in a glass bowl in the microwave at 50% power for intervals of 30 seconds or less.

Can I make my Chocolate Covered Oreos to harden faster?

Chocolate will firm faster in the refrigerator than at room temperature.

    Ingredients

    • 24 chocolate sandwich cookies
    • 2 ¼ cups melting chocolate
    • 48 candy eyes
    • 24 red hots candies or red mini M&M's
    • 24 3" x5" plastic cookie bags, open end
    • 24 brown pipe cleaners

    Instructions

    • Use wax paper to line two cookie sheets that will fit into your refrigerator.
    • Place the melting chocolate in a glass microwave-safe bowl large enough that the chocolate fills it up to 1 inch below the rim. Melt the chocolate wafers in the microwave at 50% power for one minute. Stir. If not completely melted, return to the microwave and heat for 15 second intervals, stirring between intervals, until melted.
    • Place a cookie into the melted chocolate. Using two forks, press the cookie into the chocolate, then turn it over to coat the underside.
    • Using a fork, lift the coated cookie over the bowl. Gently tap the wrist of the hand holding the fork to make excess chocolate drip back into the bowl. Place the cookie onto the prepared cookie sheet.
    • Immediately after placing each chocolate coated cookie onto the prepared pan, add the eyes and M&M nose to the top of the cookie.
    • After coating 6 cookies, place the first cookie sheet into the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to set the chocolate. Setting in the refrigerator, not at room temperature, will produce slight surface shine.
    • Complete coating the remaining cookies in groups of 6, rotating cookie sheets into the refrigerator for setting.
    • When the chocolate has set, place each chocolate coated cookie into a small plastic cookie bag.
    • Cut the pipe cleaners in half. Turn under the tips of the pipe cleaner wires to eliminate sharp edges.
    • For each set of antlers, holding two pipe cleaner halves together, twist 5 or 6 times until the untwisted ends are about ½” long. Fold the twisted pipe cleaner in half to mark the middle point.
    • Place the middle point of the pipe cleaner on the neck of the plastic bag, just above the coated cookie. Twist the pipe cleaner around the neck of the bag twice. Bend the ends to resemble antlers.
    • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

    Notes

    Packing tips
    • Pack the individually wrapped cookies closely in a box or tin.
    • Add crumpled tissue paper between the cookies and the lid, if necessary, to prevent ANY movement while shipping.
