Molten Lava Mug Cake on plate with spoon full of cake and melted chocolate.

    About this recipe

Microwave mug cakes are a perfect care package treat for anyone with a sweet tooth and access to a microwave, in other words, most college students and many military.

The Lava Cake in a Mug upgrades a plain snack and caters to the chocoholic. It looks and tastes fancy enough for company!

    Recipe Ingredients

Recipe ingredients for 3-2-1 Molten Lava Mug Cake including Pam, chocolates, and mug cake mix.

The magic mix is made of one box of angel food mix combined with one box of chocolate cake mix.

    Directions

Collage of step by step images for making mug cake mix
    1. Use a permanent marker to label a gallon size ziplock bag with the name of the mix and the simple 3-2-1 directions.
    2. To make the mix, pour one package of chocolate cake mix and one package of Angel Food mix into the prepared ziplock bag. Seal the bag and then shake until the two mixes are completely combined.
    3. Mix three tablespoons of the mix and two tablespoons of water in a mug.
    4. Press three chocolates into the batter.
    5. Cook in the microwave for one minute in the microwave.
    6. Enjoy!

    Tips

    • For care package use, pour the two mixes into a gallon-size zip lock bag labeled with directions, add a bag of chocolates, a measuring spoon and a can of non-stick spray. For a special touch, include a mug and spoon.
    • PLEASE NOTE: Aerosol cans can not be used for international air shipping (such as military care packages). I suggest including disposable microwave safe paper cups instead. These can be purchased at Dollar stores, Target, and party supply stores.

    Ingredients

    • 1 box Angel Food Cake mix
    • 1 box chocolate cake mix I used devil’s food.
    • Non-stick spray or disposable microwave safe paper cups
    • Water
    • 72 Chocolate squares 3 per mug

    Instructions

    • In a gallon sized ziplock bag, combine the two boxes of cake mix. Shake the bag to mix thoroughly.
    • If using a mug, lightly coat the inside of a microwaveable mug with non-stick spray. (Without the spray the cake will not transfer out of the mug.) Paper cups do not need coating.
    • (Here comes the 3-2-1 part) Into the prepared mug or paper cup, stir together 3 tablespoons of cake mix and 2 tablespoons of water. Push three chocolate squares, one on top of the other, into the center of the batter. The cake will rise around the chocolate pile, so don’t worry if some of the chocolate is not submerged.
    • Microwave on high for 1 minute.
    • The cake can be eaten right out of the mug/paper cup. If you want to transfer the cake onto a plate, run a knife around the edge between the cake and the mug to loosen, then dump out onto a plate.

    Notes

    • For care package use, pour the two cake mixes into a gallon-size zip lock bag labeled with directions, add a bag of chocolates, a measuring spoon and a can of non-stick spray. For a special touch, include a mug and spoon.
    • PLEASE NOTE: Aerosol cans can not be used for international air shipping (such as military care packages). I suggest including disposable microwave safe paper cups instead. These can be purchased at Dollar stores, Target, and party supply stores.
    Packing tips
    • Combine the two cake mixes into a labeled gallon-size ziplock bag.
    • Include a measuring spoon, bag of chocolates and a can of non-stick spray.
    • PLEASE NOTE: Aerosol cans can NOT be sent by international air. Send microwave safe paper cups instead. Write out directions on an index card or directly on the ziplock bag.

Hi! Thank you for reading The Monday Box! I enjoyed reading your German microwave cake site! What fun to have a site where people can share their favorite microwave cake recipes! For care packages, my recipes use only ingredients that can be shipped so that the person who gets the care package can make their own cakes. I use cake mix so that no eggs or other refrigerated ingredients are needed. Your site includes lots of helpful hint for any kind of microwave cake cooking. Anyone can use Google Translate if they don't speak German! 🙂

I'm craving chocolate, and only have one box of came mix (chocolate) can I do this without the angel food cake?

I think so, Heather. I haven't tried it with regular cake mix but I have tried it with just gluten free chocolate cake mix and it works!

The wonderful thing about 3-2-1 cake is that it is the perfect treat for "I want it NOW!" 🙂 Assuming, of course, that you have the basic ingredients on hand. As long as you have a cake mix (even without the angel food mix) you can make a variation on 3-2-1! I hope you get your 3-2-1 fix soon! 🙂 lol

What is the variation without using angel food mix? Just the one cake mix?
I just discovered your site and subscribed and want to try one of the wonderful looking mug cakes this next week-end but wasn't sure if I'd have to get the angel cake mix beforehand. Look forward to hearing the answer. Great Photos!!!

Hi, Eileen! You can make 3-2-1 cake with only one flavored cake mix and leave out the angel food mix but the cakes won't rise as much. The angel food cake is full of egg whites which work as the rising agent in these cakes. See my answer under your comment on the 3-2-1 Pina Colada Cake for further suggestions. Thank you for your kind comment about the photos. I hope they make you hungry. 🙂
