When oranges weren’t available year round, finding an orange in your Christmas stocking was cause for celebration. The tradition of giving oranges at Christmas may have started during the Depression when oranges were a luxury. A Saint Nicholas story is also attributed as a reason for the gifting of oranges, symbolic of the golden spheres Saint Nicholas sent down a poor man’s chimney.
Adding some orange tradition to your holiday baking could not be easier than with Chocolate Orange Cookies. There is almost no measuring or mixing involved! A package of refrigerated sugar cookie dough combined with a tablespoon of orange zest instantly transforms the plain dough with citrus flavor and aroma. How you add chocolate to these cookies, depends on your time and preference. So short on time that you are counting the minutes? Mix in some mini chocolate chips and no further embellishment is needed. If you have a few extra minutes, the dough balls can be dipped in orange sugar before baking and then the cookies can be dipped in melted chocolate after baking. (I used dark dipping and coating melting chocolate from Chocoley.com on these cookies, saving more time and adding chocolate with a beautiful sheen.) Either way, you get orange-chocolate deliciousness in every crunchy bite.
Time saving Chocolate Orange Cookies are a flavorful treat you will want to bake even when you aren’t in a time crunch. Whether for gifts, holiday platters, or a tea time snack, Chocolate Orange Cookies are a super simple way to sweeten the day.
- 1 (16.5 ounce) roll refrigerated sugar cookie dough, room temperature
- 1 tablespoon orange zest, packed
- ½ cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips (I use Whole Foods 365 brand fair trade chocolate chips)
- DECORTATING OPTIONS:
- ¾ cup melting chocolate (I use Chocoley.com Bada Bing Bada Boom dark dipping and coating)
- Orange sparkle sugar
- ¼ cup mini chocolate chips
- Preheat the oven to 350° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a medium mixing bowl, using a spoon or rubber spatula, combine the cookie dough and orange zest. If not dipping the cookies in melted chocolate, ½ cup of mini chocolate chips can be mixed into the dough now.
- Use a small scoop (1 tablespoon) to portion the dough onto the prepared baking sheet about 2” apart. If using sparkle sugar, dip the top of the dough balls into orange sugar before baking. If using chocolate chips, a few chips can be added to the top of the dough balls before baking.
- Bake for 9-11 minutes or until edges begin to turn golden.
- Cool on the baking pan for about 5 minutes, then transfer onto wire racks to cool completely.
- To chocolate dip the plain or orange sugared cookies: Line a baking sheet with wax paper. Melt the dark chocolate. Dip the edge of ½ of each cookie in the melted chocolate. Place the dipped cookie on the prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate for 5 minutes, or until the chocolate is set.
- Store Chocolate Orange Cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days. These cookies get crunchier over time.
